Annie Bell Winfield, our beautiful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, super-duper Godmother and sister to 7 living siblings as well as an awesome friend to many people, transitioned into the arms of her holy God the morning hours of Monday, April 1, 2024. At 6:30am, while her fourth child and youngest daughter, Annette, held her in her loving arms until Annie breathe her last breath.
Annie was born in Pickens, Mississippi in 1938. She was married to Clyde Winfield in 1955 at an extremely early age, making her an extremely young mother. She bore five children in her 58 year marriage to Clyde. Annie also worked as a Behavioral Health Tech at the Arizona State Hospital for 25 years.
Annie saw every child as her own. She was the only adult in their house in Alaska when the 1964 Alaska earthquake occurred. She was alone in the house with her four children and a young neighbor boy, a friend of her oldest son Willie who was visiting at the time. When that house shook, her youngest child Annette, who was only six years old at the time, threw her hands in the air and ran to Annie screaming, crying, and shouting, “Save me mama, save me”. Annie’s husband, Clyde was stuck outside the house because the earthquake was so strong it wedged the door shut and he could not get to his wife and kids. Annie, a very young mother at the time, alone in the house with five young children to calm down and to comfort during the most powerful recorded earthquake in U.S. and World history.
Annie was the fourth child and second daughter of a family of 15 children born to Aaron and Eliza Clerk. Annie became a daughter of King Jesus at the early age of 12 and she loved her Savior, King Jesus all her life. She knew she wasn’t perfect but she loved everybody and she could only do her best. Annie was a powerful force herself because God made her that way. A quote that describes her is, “They whispered to the woman, you cannot withstand the storm. The woman (Annie Bell Winfield) turned to them and said, “I am the Storm!”
A visitation for Annie Bell Winfield will be held Friday, April 26, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary, 200 West Beardsley Road, Phoenix, AZ 85027. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, with the burial to follow at Phoenix Memorial Park.
