After migrating from Texas, Ruthe's family ran Oliver's Liquors on 12th St. and McDowell in Phoenix. It was formerly a small grocery until the depression.
Ruthe graduated from North High. She went to the University of Arizona to complete her education degree. Ruthe started teaching home economics followed by many grades ranging from 2nd to 8th at Lafayette Elementary (now Larry C. Kennedy). A fun fact is that Ruthe was able to teach not only her son, David, but nephew Darren, and Niece Melanie, for their 7th and 8th grade English instruction. Ruthe was extremely passionate about inspiring inquisitiveness and exploration in her students. She loved her job and has created ongoing relationships with her students and so many of the staff members she worked with.
Ruthe met her best friend, Gail Fleming in 3rd grade and they remained close for the past 77 years. Most don't know but in her younger years, Ruthe rocked the accordion. Ruthe was known for her storytelling and great sense of humor. Her laughter was infectious and she often had everyone in stitches before the story was even completed. Ruthe was never without a smile and she saw the potential and positivity in everything around her.
Ruthe met her second husband Bob after getting the bug of international travel when they met on one of the tours. Ruthe and Bob were married on March 11th, 2006. Ruthe has been active and passionate in several doll clubs and is an avid collector. She and Bob volunteered at Gammage and Channel 8 for many years. Until recently, they did extensive international travel.
Ruthe is survived by her doting husband, Bob, daughter-in-law Hung, and two amazing grandchildren, Sierra and Oliver. Ruthe is preceded in death by her sons Kenny and David, and her first husband Charlie.
