Benjamin Wade Brakefield was born May 16, 1929 in Solomon, Arizona to father Wade James Brakefield and mother Sarah Elizabeth Head.

He was the 7th of 8 boys. Ben worked assisting his family from the age of 6 years old, starting with picking cotton. He worked a multitude of jobs growing up-- ranging from building bridges on the road to Florence, AZ to shipyards in California and farms all up and down the West Coast. He obtained employment at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company at 18 years old and spent 32 1/2 years there. The only interruption to his employment was 2 years of Army Combat in the Korean War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.

After retiring from Goodyear, Ben worked 10 1/2 years for the Deer Valley School District in Glendale, AZ as a Grounds Keeper. After his 2nd retirement, he went to work at Anthem Mall as a security guard and then at Anthem Park as a Grounds Keeper.

At the age of 35 his life changed forever when he fell in love with Jesus, and the remaining 55 years of his life he witnessed salvation through Jesus to everyone he came in contact with.

He became an ordained minister through The Lord's Church in Bellflower, CA and would preach Jesus in the pulpit every opportunity he was given.

His life was always a life of sacrifice for others, starting after his parents divorce. At the age of 15, Ben took partial financial responsibility of his mother, and full responsibility at age 18 because she had no one else to care for her, delaying his life for her.

He met and married the love of his life at 38, and they had 4 children, who have given him 8 grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Jacquelin Brakefield of New River, AZ; his 4 children Roger Brakefield of New River, AZ; Jewlene Walkington and husband James Walkington with grandsons James and Levi of Surprise, AZ; Paula Brakefield of Prescott Valley, AZ; and David Brakefield and wife Tara Brakefield with grandsons Caleb, Noah, and Benjamin along with granddaughters Alexia, Charis, and Gavriela of New River, AZ. He has also left behind MANY family and friends who claim him as a Dad due to his unfailing support to them throughout their lives... of which he loved dearly.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Wounded Warrior Project in memory of Ben.

I have many fond memories of Ben when he attended our church. One memory I love, is when Ben took my brother and I on a trip up the coastline to Portland, Oregon. We had so much fun talking and stopping along the way to see the many sites.
Ben always called me his little sister. When he would see me, he would always say, "there is my little sis." I will always remember the special memories I have of Ben. You will be deeply missed.

I have known Ben many years, even before he and Jackie married. I saw him as a man who loved Jesus and fully dedicated his life to sharing his faith. One old memory happened when Bob and I only had two daughters. Ben told me “I believe God showed me that you will have a boy next time”. I was a bit skeptical but sometime later our next (and final) child was born. Ben was right—we had a boy!

I had one of the best Grandpa’s in the world! It was fun watching TV with you. It was fun watching football with you too. I loved playing with you tickling me, it was fun, and I will miss that...but I think you will do that again in eternity! I am glad you were my papa because we had fun teasing each other. I wish I would’ve had more time with you before you left for heaven, and I am glad you are in heaven and I will see you again in heaven!

To My Grandpa,

I loved how you talked to me about Jesus. When I got in trouble and went to your room to sit, you would always teach me about honoring and obeying my parents so that I will have a long life. You always taught people about Jesus and that is what I loved about you. I will miss watching football games with you. I am so honored to have such a wonderful Grandpa like you. I love you, miss you and will see you again. Love Caleb!

I had so much fun watching football games and The Three Stooges with you. I loved hiding behind walls and scaring you when you walked into the room. I will miss ramming my head into your tummy. I love you so much and will miss you bunches. I will see you again in Heaven. Love Noah!

I had the best Grandpa. I loved him very much! I bet he’s rejoicing in heaven up there. He was kind of funny! We used to play back and forth, weakly punching in the belly. I know he loved all of us grandkids very much. He fought in the military for us, and I am really glad he did this for us. I will miss him very much! I will see him in eternity!
