Brian was born on August 25, 1949 to Frank and Grace Oakes in Chicago, Illinois. After attending Danville College, he moved to Arizona to attend Arizona State University.
He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years and retired as Postmaster of Overgaard, Arizona. After retiring, he spent his time doing many things. Traveling with his wife Josie was one of his favorite things to do, as they had many adventures together, which included his best friend and 3 year old grandson Ian on many occasions. They both loved being involved with the USPS, attending many of the UPMA National Conventions being one of them. Brian was also the editor for the United Postmasters and Managers of America Newsletter for Arizona well over 20 years. He was a Tax Preparer during every tax season since retirement. Cars and motorcycles was another love in Brian’s life. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and passion with his family, friends and especially his grandchildren. When up north, he spent time volunteering with Josie and enjoyed getting involved with the community and The Skull Valley Historical Society
He is survived by his wife Josie of 20 years, brother Gary (Shirley) Oakes, sister Pam (Phil) Umnus, 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Greenwood Lawn Mortuary, 719 North 27th Ave., Phoenix, AZ with Visitation on Thursday, Dec. 19th from 1:00 – 3:30 pm and Rosary at 3:30 – 4:00 pm and burial on Friday, Dec. 20th at 10:00 am. Condolences can be expressed at dignitymemorial.com
