On Thursday, September 13, 2018, Carl Nicholas of Phoenix, Arizona passed away at the age of 78. He leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years Josefa (known as "Pepi"); his two daughters, Mary Zeiszler (Peter) and Joann Nicholas; and his grandchildren, Jonathan Stone, Carl Zeiszler, Debra Zeiszler, and Kelly Graves; his brother, Raymond Nicholas (Kathy); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Carl was born on May 20, 1940 in Flint, Michigan to Rex and Beatrice. He was raised by his father, Rex and his step-mother, Jean. Carl joined the Air Force after high school as a young baker and took every opportunity to advance his education. He was soon working as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician, and eventually as a Safety Management Supervisor. Also becoming the first person in his family to earn a college degree, he achieved a Bachelor of Science in Social Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Management/Human Resources, then went on to earn a Master's Degree in Public Administration. He completed his career with the Air Force after 28 years; retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1987.
He met Pepi while he was station in Seville, Spain and it was love at first sight! He often liked saying that she was his souvenir from Spain.
Carl was an outdoors man and loved camping, hunting, and especially fishing. He earned a pilot's license while stationed in Alaska just so he could get to far away fishing holes faster. He enjoyed working on his family's genealogy, gardening, raising butterflies with his grandchildren and relaxing in his backyard, watching the birds feed from his many flowering plants.
