Catarino Medina Correa was born in Durango Mexico on November 25th 1924.
Catarino’s father Placio and mother Tranquilina worked the farms and had lived in El Paso Texas in the 1930’s, dad was only 6 years old at that time. The family also lived and raised the kids in the small town of San Augustine, Mexico. Catarino came to Phoenix, Az about 1956 where he married Constance Barraza who already had two young boys. Catarino and Constance added four more children to their family but unfortunately losing their last child due to a miscarriage.
Catarino worked several jobs to provide, from working in a restaurant, working at St. Francis Cemetery and finally finding his gift as a groundskeeper. Catarino worked for several years at The Phoenix Country Club where he was the king of the Roses. He also had his own lawn service and worked several areas in the valley and had several clients in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. He would hire some of the neighborhood teens and his own kids to help him on the weekends and for some it would have been their first job. He would also sit at the corner of 16th street and University and sell whatever he could. I think he liked to watch the traffic more than selling, and he would be out there in the hottest part of the day.
Outside of working hard Catarino also played hard. He loved the game of baseball and handball and was very good at both. Catarino also loved to sing and dance. He and Mom would go dancing with dinner and whenever he had the chance to sing, he was ready. Don't forget about Casino Tuesday with his son John.
After losing his wife Constance in 2021 Catarino worked hard up until his last days, he was still watering the flowers he planted at his son’s house and getting his cans ready to go cash in and letting us know when it was time to cut the grass and don’t forget to weed eat. The heat never stopped him, in fact he preferred the heat. Still traveling to El Paso TX every year to celebrate his birthday with family and friends and of course singing.
Dad’s favorite sayings were: I chihuahua, lets go lets go, I have something for you, go home, turn off the lights and of course he would call you “Robert!”
