Cecilia had a deep love for dancing, singing, and spending time with her family and friends. Nothing brought her more happiness than being with her beloved daughters, Creshawnda and Shawniece, who were truly the center of her world. Her laughter, strength, compassion, and vibrant personality brought comfort and joy to all who were blessed to know her.
From an early age, Cecilia’s love for music was evident. As a child, she sang in the choir at First Institutional Baptist Church, where her beautiful spirit and passion for singing began to shine. During her teenage years, she became a member of the Black Theatre Troupe, where she expressed her creativity and love for performance. Cecilia graduated from North High School in 1980, continued her education through college courses, and went on to dedicate 27 years of faithful service to the Arizona State Retirement System.
She was preceded in death by her dearly loved mother, Katherine Johnson; her father, Johnny Leary; and her sisters, Linda Johnson and Debra Mabry.
Cecilia leaves to cherish her memory her beloved daughters, Creshawnda and Shawniece Leary; her sister, Sandra Leary; her brother, David Leary; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.
Her daughters would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to her niece, Tyann Leary; her nephew, Dewayne Cantley; her best friend, Beverly Mata and the Westover Family for their unwavering love, care, and support.
Her daughters would like to also thank their mother for always being the example they needed. She taught them the value of hard work, to always lead with kindness, how to be confident in their skin and most importantly, what it means to be truly seen and deeply loved. From the time they were children she used to always tell them, “My blackness is the beauty of this land, warm and wise, tender and strong, my blackness is the beauty of this land.” This mantra was repeated endlessly in their household, with the constant reminder that they were worthy.
Cecilia’s beautiful spirit, loving heart, and radiant presence will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
We love you momma, all in the world.
