

Charles Lee Atkerson, 98, resident of Glendale, Arizona went to be with his Lord and Saviour on September 3, 2010. He was born in Tennessee on March 16, 1912, to Charles and Minnie Lee; and came to Arizona on the train with his family on his 8th birthday. He has always been in the grocery business starting with working in his father's "Mom & Pop" store until the day he retired as manager of Russ Keeton's Save-Way Market. He was a faithful church treasurer for the First Missionary Church for more than 25 yrs. In 1962 he was crowned the State Champion Checker Player for Arizona. He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Irma Ruth. He is survived by his daughter, Millie Rahmatulla (Ish) of Glendale, and son, Charles, of La Mirada, California. There are 6 grandchildren and their spouses: Harry Sexton (Cindy), Jerry Sexton (Kim), Larry Sexton (Debby), Scott Atkerson (Brenda), Karen Meyer (Michael), and David Atkerson (Genevieve). Charles has 18 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister, Edith Godfrey, of Phoenix. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sep. 7, 2010, at his church where he was a member for 20 yrs., Palmcroft Baptist Church, 15825 N 35 Ave, Phoenix, Arizona. Public viewing will be at 11 a.m. and the service will be at 12 noon. Concluding services will be held at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, 719 N 27th Avenue, Phoenix. www.greenwoodmemorylawn.com
