June 16, 1927April 5, 2013

Charles “Charlie” Artis Bennett, 85, passed away into God’s loving arms on April 5, 2013, after a courageous battle with a rare skin cancer. Born June 16, 1927, in Clifton, AZ, to Charles “Buster” Bennett and Vada Slaughter Bennett, as a third generation from two pioneer Arizona families. The family moved to Phoenix in 1930. He attended North Phoenix High School and graduated from ASU. Charlie served in the U.S. Navy on board the USS Block Island aircraft carrier during WWII. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary, his son Charlie (Cynthia) Bennett, daughter Carolyn (Danny) Moore, sister Charlotte Stuart, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He worked 30 years with his father managing Buster’s Market and then joined Jarrett’s Travel Service until he retired in 1990. Charlie enjoyed volunteering with many organizations including the Phoenix 20-30 Club and St. Mary’s Food Bank. He was a charter member of Moon Valley Country Club and enjoyed playing golf, as well as deep sea fishing in Mexico and entertaining friends. He had many fond memories that were made through the years, many wonderful times spent building life-long friendships and most of all, enjoying his family and those special friends. He truly appreciated all of their support and love. A Memorial Service will be held at Serenity Chapel at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren St., Phoenix, on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Charlie’s memory to St. Mary’s Food Bank, 2831 N. 31st. Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85009.

Carolyn, I'm sorry for your loss. I didn't know your father well but I do remember him being open when you wanted to marry Freddie at 18 ( if I remembered correctly) because that's what his little girl wanted.
