Donna Rose (Surface) Homsher, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born on December 6, 1939, in Victoria, Texas, to Mildred (Mears) Surface and Clarence Surface. This Yellow Rose of Texas later moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1962 with her husband, Jack R Homsher where they began their family. You can take the girl out of Texas, but you’ll never take Texas out of the girl!
Donna dedicated her life to empowering young girls to become strong, independent women through Camp Fire (an organization for young women's empowerment) and more. She opened the doors of her home, embracing them as if they were her own daughters. In her nurturing presence, she not only imparted kindness, but also instilled a sense of strength, guiding them towards their own paths with compassion and wisdom. Her nurturing spirit and unwavering support touched countless lives.
Donna's multifaceted talents were evident from her early days as a competitive diver on the high school team, and leader of the pep squad. As a seamstress she crafted clothes, and intricate performance costumes for her daughters, Kendra and Andrea, she then continued channeling her skills into creating Halloween costumes that ignited her grandson Devin's imagination. Beyond her sewing needle, her keen eye for landscaping transformed the family backyard into a sanctuary. Her knack for writing left an unforgettable mark on the hearts of those who read her stories. Donna's greatest masterpiece was her caretaking—of all her cherished family, friends, and broader community.
During her illustrious career as an Administrative Assistant at the Arizona State Capitol, Donna left an indelible mark on those she encountered. Through her 23 years of service at the State Capital, Donna left a legacy of professionalism, integrity, and dedication as she fought tirelessly alongside several State Senators and House Representatives to protect Democracy while supporting her community. Her commitment to public service continued after retirement as she worked with Cordova Neighborhood Association in efforts to improve the neighborhood, and ensure that Grand Canyon University didn’t encroach on its residents.
Donna’s passion for public service was matched only by her appreciation for the outdoors. She found solace in nature, often immersing herself in the beauty of the Arizona landscape through hiking, backpacking, and swimming. Her adventurous spirit knew no bounds, and she instilled in her loved ones a deep appreciation for the world around them.
Laughter was always at the forefront of Donna’s heart and experiences. She was the party girl! Above all, Donna will be remembered for her kindness, laughter, generosity, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends. She had a rare gift for making everyone feel seen and valued, regardless of their circumstances. Her endless love and compassion knew no bounds, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Donna is survived by her devoted husband, Jack R Homsher, her daughters Kendra S Homsher and Andrea L Homsher, her grandson Devin A Homsher, and a host of cherished relatives and friends.
