Linda's Memories of Aunt Doris
Although we had known her for years, I first became fully aware of Aunt Doris's true personality in the early 60's, when I was a teen. My Dad Ellis, her brother, liked to travel so he brought my mother, brother and I to Tucson. We stayed almost a week at your home. The experience has influenced me ever since and will not fade.
We arrived after dark. A mattress was placed on the living room floor and that is where I was when I opened my eyes to the early summer morning. What I saw through the picture window made me gasp. A huge red mountain loomed over the house and the skies above were cloudless and wonderfully blue. That began my love affair with Arizona. But I think it was only because of my Aunt.
She awoke smiling and bubbly and happy, eager to show off her countryside to the easterners. She liked adventure just as we did and soon we were collecting rocks, studying cacti, climbing mountains, and riding small riffs and rapids in Sabino Canyon's stream. She thrilled me with stories of sidewinders and jumping chollas, smiling and laughing as she narrated. Like it was mere child's play. I couldn't help but be charmed by her, and my bond and admiration were set for life.
Back at the house she made me laugh when she went about her chores. I followed her around a while as she did the cleaning. “A lick and a promise” is how she described it. I really liked that. Now that I am in my own home and go about cleaning it her way, I hear her saying that each time I do. 
We returned two more times. Once I asked to sleep outside, so she put the mattress under the carport. The next morning she casually laughed about the dead, flattened black widow spider that I had slept on. She wasn't afraid, so neither was I. The last time she gave me a small cactus. It still resides in my home, almost forty years later, and a treasured reminder of our great loss. She is gone now, but what a wonderful influence she has been to me.
