Joyce was born along with her twin sister, Janet, on January 31, 1923 in Wilmette, Illinois, to Gilbert and Ethel (Southard) Stansell. She grew up in Dixon, Illinois, attended Elgin High School and graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University. During her early career as a registered nurse, she met her husband, Fred Rozum. They were married in 1951 and spent over 57 happy years together until Fred’s death in 2008. After being a homemaker and mother to her four children, Joyce re-entered the workforce, first as a part-time, then as a full-time, psychiatric nurse in Springfield, Illinois before moving on to St. Luke's Hospital in Phoenix where she retired in 1995 at the age of 72.
Joyce is remembered by her four children, David Rozum (Karla) of Arizona, Mary Rozum-Pratto of Arizona, Jane Rozum (Tim Hutchison) of Colorado and John Rozum (Wendy Goodfriend) of California; her twin sister, Janet Rahn of Texas; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, along with family and friends.
Joyce was a wonderful listener and lived an active life. She was an avid runner and loved to walk along the shores of her beloved Lake Michigan (Big Blue), spending many family summers on the beaches and in the woods of Leelanau County. Her enthusiasm for life, optimistic outlook, sense of humor, and love of music and singing will be missed by all that she knew.
A private family service will be held in Michigan at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joyce’s name can be made to Sage Hospice, 5111 N. Scottsdale Rd., Suite 204, Scottsdale, AZ 85250.
