Dorothy was born on a Homestead site in Walsh County, North Dakota. She spoke only Bohemian when first enrolled in grade school. Her father invested in farming equipment, but went bankrupt during the depression, and sold that equipment to one of his 9 brothers. The family used that money to establish residence in Minneapolis.
In 1944 Dorothy went to Pasadena to live with her cousin, Laverne, and worked as a telephone operator. When the war was over, Dorothy came back home to Minneapolis, where she met her husband Michael on a blind date. Mark, Patricia, John and Nona were born in Minneapolis. The family moved to Phoenix via Salt River Canyon in 1959. Once in Phoenix, we reunited with Berrier, Havir and Linland families from her younger days in Minneapolis. Another child, Robert was born in Phoenix and sadly passed away at age 13. 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren so far.
Dorothy worked evenings as a seamstress while her children were young and still managed to keep house, bake bread, sew clothes and create home cooked meals.
Along with spending time with family, friends and St Gregory parishioners, she enjoyed cooking, baking, puzzles, cribbage, Lawrence Welk Show, playing cards and Bohemian music. In her later years it was TV Mass, Bonanza and Gunsmoke.
Babysitting the grandchildren while the parents were at work brought her tremendous joy. She did insist though that the kids had to go when they turned 2.
The family made annual summer excursions back to MN & ND to see more family. And many local camping weekends and vacation trips across Arizona, the US, Canada and Mexico in an assortment of vehicles visiting mostly parks, monuments, forests, lakes and attractions.
A funeral service for Dorothy will be held at St Gregory Catholic Church, 3424 N 18th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85015, on Friday, January 10, 2025 at 9:00 AM. A graveside service will occur at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 9925 W Thomas Rd, Avondale, Arizona 85392, Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 11:00 AM.
