Firoze Hormusji Broacha, 95, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 21st, 2018. Memorial services will be held from 10:00am-11:30am on Sunday, October 28th at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary in Phoenix.
Firoze was born on October 4, 1923 in Jubbulpore, India to Hormusji and Manek Broacha. He is the beloved husband of the late Rita Burke Broacha who he loved and cherished from the first day they met in 1947 to the very minute he passed away on October 21, 2018. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary the year of Rita’s passing in 2002.
Firoze graduated from the University of Bombay in 1945 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He traveled to Boston, Massachusetts that same year to attend Harvard University’s Graduate School of Engineering on a full scholarship and graduated in 1947 with a master’s degree in Structural Engineering. Firoze and Rita met in the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in 1947. One of Firoze’s Harvard schoolmates had convinced him that the only way for a shy, inexperienced young man to meet beautiful American women was to go dancing at one of the local clubs. Firoze signed up for dancing lessons at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio, and, low and behold, Rita was his dancing instructor. They were married in 1948, and the rest was 54 years of wonderful history.
Out of college, Firoze worked for US Steel and several different construction companies. Over his career, he led or participated in the design of many bridges and buildings. Some of his more famous projects were the Matterhorn in Disneyland, the Transamerica skyscraper in San Francisco, and a World’s Fair Globe. In 1951, Firoze became an official citizen of the USA. In 1967, Firoze became restless and wanted to support his new homeland, so he took a position with the Department of Defense building field bridges and structures in Vietnam during the war, while his family lived nearby in safety, in beautiful Bangkok, Thailand. Firoze and family returned to the USA in 1970. In 1979, Firoze had built a stellar reputation as a diligent and creative Structural, Civil, and Value Engineer, so he decided to work as an independent consultant choosing interesting projects domestically and abroad until
his retirement in 1998 at the age of 75.
Firoze was known for being a very intelligent, kind, and generous man. He loved his family very much and spent the majority of his time after Rita’s passing focused on ensuring their success and wellbeing. He was, in kind, adored and very appreciated by them as well. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his sons Earuch Broacha of Monument, Colorado and Rustum Broacha of Pleasanton, California; his daughter Elaine Broacha of Tucson, Arizona; his daughters-in-law Laurie Broacha of Pleasanton, California and Tammy Alcock of Monument, Colorado; his grandchildren Morgan Broacha of Monument, Colorado, Sarah Broacha of San Diego, California, Kira Broacha of Pleasanton, California, Samantha Alcock of Monument, Colorado, and Alexandra Alcock of Monument, Colorado.
