George M Ernst Jr.

George was born on June 23, 1934, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to George M. Ernst Sr. and Mary Ernst, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary “Spunky” Ernst, and his sister, Mary Goshert.

George is survived by his brother, Frank Ernst; his son, George Ernst III; daughter-in-law, Sharon Ernst; granddaughter, Alexis Soto, and her husband, Robert Soto; and his great-grandson, Aiden Soto.

A proud United States Navy veteran, George honorably served his country during the Korean War. Following his military service, he dedicated more than 40 years to Mountain State Telephone Company, where he built a career marked by loyalty and hard work before retiring.

Retirement allowed George to give back in ways that reflected his generous spirit. He volunteered extensively at the VA Hospital, offering his time and compassion to fellow veterans, and served as a counselor for Arizona Boys State, mentoring young men and encouraging civic leadership.

George lived life to the fullest. He loved traveling—especially fishing trips to Mexico—and embraced every experience with enthusiasm. Known for his consistently upbeat attitude, George remained positive regardless of the situation. He especially enjoyed visiting with friends, neighbors, and family, always valuing connection and conversation.

In his later years, George found great joy in playing golf, continuing his volunteer work at the VA, and spending time with those he loved most. His warmth, optimism, and kindness will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

A service to honor George’s life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary located at 710 W. Bethany Home Road. Military honors will be rendered in recognition of his service to the United States Navy. A luncheon will follow at a location to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s name to the VA Hospital, in gratitude for the care provided to veterans and in honor of George’s lifelong commitment to service.
