
Dr. Herman Bouwer, one of the world’s leading researchers in water management and groundwater, died on July 28, 2013 at age 86 of complications from Parkinson’s Disease. He was a native of The Netherlands and moved to the United States in 1952 for his Ph.D. from Cornell University. He worked for 43 years at the U.S. Water Conservation Laboratory, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture in Phoenix, serving as Director for 18 years. Herman was also an adjunct faculty member of both U of A and ASU. He enjoyed family, tennis, gardening, swimming, and bike riding. Herman is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jessie Bouwer; daughter Annette Flegenheimer; two sons, Edward Bouwer and A. G. Bouwer; and five grandchildren.
