She was born in her grandparents’ home in Whitney, Idaho, on May 27, 1932, to Verna and Garland Kidd. She was the oldest of nine children. HughLene was raised in Preston, Idaho, where she proudly danced as an Indianette on the Preston High School drill team.
She met the love of her life, Daryl Hyrum Workman, while he was speaking at church. From the moment he saw her in the congregation, he knew she would be his wife—he just had to convince her. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on July 11, 1952, and eventually settled in the Phoenix, Arizona area in 1957 after living in Salt Lake City and Idaho Falls.
A devoted and loving mother, HughLene dedicated most of her life to raising her family. While she occasionally worked as a bank teller to support the household, her proudest role was being a stay-at-home mom. She and Daryl raised six children—four sons and two daughters—and welcomed a foster daughter into their home for a time.
HughLene was a lifelong and deeply devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in many callings, but her favorite was working at girls' camp, which she did well into her 80s. She was known to out-hike even the youngest campers, embodying strength, spirit, and joy. She faithfully kept a journal for many years.
Kindhearted and never one to speak ill of others, HughLene made everyone feel special. She was a passionate sports fan and never missed a chance to support her children and grandchildren in their activities. She cherished her family. On every birthday, family members could count on a heartfelt call—and a birthday song. Everyone will remember her laugh that touched many hearts.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Daryl, her parents, one sister, and her baby daughter, Teresa. She is survived by her children: Daryl Lynn (Rosanne), Kit (Jill), Tammie (Gary), Tony, and Jeff (Alison), Vicki; 27 grandchildren; and 61 great-grandchildren.
There will be a viewing at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Chapel, located at 10877 North 77th Avenue, Peoria, Arizona 85345, on August 7th, Thursday, from 5-6:30pm and followed by a service from 6:30-8. On August 8th, Friday, at 10am will be the grave dedication at the Greenwood Memory Lawn and Mortuary.
