Jade Y Wong was born on January 10, 1946, in Bok-Sun Village, Nam-Sun Township, Toisan County in China. She was the oldest of six children born to Chun Pui Yee and Chan Ngor Sui. The family moved to Hong Kong in 1959.
She married her husband Larry Y. Wong in Hong Kong on June 6, 1967. She immigrated to the United States on November 25, 1967. Their first child was delivered early in March 1968, and they purchased Diamond D Market grocery store in July 1968. She tirelessly worked at the store, began to learn English to converse with the customers, and had two more children within the next three years. Her perseverance and hard work at their mom-and-pop grocery store allowed her husband to serve in the growing Phoenix Chinese community: the Wong's Association, the Phoenix Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and the Phoenix Chinese United Association.
For the next 18 years of working long hours at the store, seven days a week, and serving their customers while raising three children, they were able to retire in 1985 and travel the world with friends. When Jade was not traveling, she and her husband could be found active at the gym, meeting new friends and neighbors, and tending her garden, growing all varieties of Chinese vegetables and melons. She became a proud grandmother in 2002-2013 and visited her grandchildren in both California and Texas.
Jade is preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law Lisa Lai Wah Yee, and brother Ben Yee (Gladys). She is survived by her beloved husband, Larry, of 57 years, her daughter Gina Gee (Allen), and sons Michael (Sharon) and Tim; five grandchildren, Aaron, Stephen, and Jocelyne Gee, Andrew and Matthew Wong; brothers Hui "Harry" (Lisa), Harvey (Shirley), Hung Yee (Judy), sister Susan Yee Bales (Glenn), and sister-in-law Gladys Yee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Jade will be held Thursday, September 19, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary Serenity Chapel, 719 North 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009.
