

James P. (Jim) Howell, 87, of Sun City, AZ passed away peacefully on March 2, 2011. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Evelyn (Hughes); two children, Linda Culver (Bill) and Daniel Howell (Lana); five grandchildren, Kerri Culver McWenie, Julie Culver, Vicki Culver Stockton, Kelly Howell, and Dan Howell, seven great-grandchildren; brother, Dale Howell (Margie); sister, JoAnn Wilson (William) and many nieces and nephews. Jim moved with his family from Oklahoma to Phoenix in 1934. He attended Phoenix Union High School. At the age of 17, during World War II, Jim joined the Navy, where he served 22 months in Alaska. After his 22-month duty, he returned home to Phoenix and married the love of his life. Jim proudly served his country through a 20-year career in the Navy. Jim retired from the Navy as a chief petty officer. Throughout his military career, he was stationed in: Memphis, TN; Pensacola, FL; Oceana, VA; and Whidbey Island, WA. His ship duty was aboard the Intrepid and Randolph. His overseas duties included the Mediterranean, Cuba, Japan and two tours at the Litchfield Park, AZ Naval Air Facility. He retired from service in 1960, but continued in a career with Liquid Air before retiring for good. Jim was very active in the El Zaribah Shrine, served as captain twice in the Mounted Patrol, and belonged to an RV travel group and the Mason’s travel group. Services for Jim will be held at Greenwood Memorial Mortuary, 719 N. 27th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85009 (602 272-5639), on Monday, March 7th, 2011. Visitation is at 10:00 a.m. with services following at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Hospice of the Valley.
