James Bernard Lindgren, age 89, passed away peacefully in Phoenix on May 26, 2023 with his loving family at his side. James (Jim) was born on February 1, 1934, in Concord, New Hampshire, to Milo and Cecelia Lindgren. His parents and younger brother Robin preceded him in death. He is survived by Janice M. Lindgren, his loving wife of 66 years, his five children: Erin Goold (Dan), Susan Lindgren, James M. Lindgren (Loretta), Laurie Carter (Joe), and Timothy Lindgren (Cathy), as well as ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one niece.
Growing up, Jim’s interests centered on his parents’ Contoocook River camp, Tak-It-EZ, where his enthusiasm for canoeing, fishing, waterskiing, and shooting led to the nickname “River Rat”. He met his beloved wife Janice when they were both in their teens, working at Hitchcock Toy Store in Concord. Jim graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his career he worked for Bell Telephone, General Electric, Honeywell, and other companies. His job transfers took the family from coast to coast, landing at various times in Schenectady, NY; Phoenix, AZ; San Diego, CA; and Hollis, NH.
Jim took his family on many camping adventures: traveling to Mexico in the “Baja Bomber” station wagon, the mountains of Arizona, and the California coast to name a few. Jim always loved a yard sale bargain, or a bargain of any kind, including many used cars over the years, earning him the nickname “Mr. Fix-it”. While tinkering, his beloved classical music would be booming for all to hear.
Jim’s retirement years gave him and Janice the chance to indulge their love of travel, including cruises, motor-homing across the country, visits to family and friends, and several trips to York Beach, Maine, a family favorite for generations.
Jim loved a good nickname, saving the best for himself: “your dear, sweet Dad”. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
Visitation will be held Tuesday June 6, at 10:00 AM, with Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. St. Luke Catholic Church, 19644 North 7th Ave, Phoenix. Burial will follow at Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery, 23015 Cave Creek Rd, Phoenix. A short reception will be held at 1:00 PM at the Boulder Ridge Community Club House, 2233 E. Behrend Dr, Phoenix.
