

John Elwood Hall, age 85, passed away on January 31, 2026, in Surprise, AZ, following complications from strokes. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the only child of George Henry Hall and Marie Louise Steinbrenner. John dedicated 36 years to diplomatic service, representing the United States in France, Iceland, Switzerland, New Zealand, Liberia, and Canada. Fluent in French, German, and Icelandic, he was renowned for his gift with language and his passions for reading, writing, and speaking.
John’s adventurous spirit led him to travel across every continent - including Antarctica. In retirement, he shared his love of learning as an instructor with the Grand Learning program in Surprise, AZ. He had passions for hiking, woodworking, and was a devoted patron of the arts. John was cherished by friends for his kindness and thoughtful nature, and he enjoyed attending theater productions and the West Valley Symphony with them.
In 2014, John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Janet, whom he cared for devotedly during her journey with Alzheimer’s. He is survived by their three children – James Hall (Anabel) in NY, Julie Gilles (Tracey Hyatt) in MD, and Jeffrey Hall (Longoria) in WA – and three grandchildren: Stephen, Angela, and Zachary. He also leaves behind Joyce Zevenbergen, with whom he found unexpected joy and love in the last decade of his life.
John’s generosity, warmth, and adventurous spirit touched all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the memories and lives of those he loved.
