Johnny was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and grew up in the Mini Park neighborhood. He attended W.R. Sullivan Elementary School and Carl Hayden High School, where he formed childhood friendships, many of which lasted a lifetime.
He spent most of his life working as a mason in the family business, Ruben Canez Masonry.
Johnny loved his family. He was known to call periodically to check in or just to talk. He enjoyed listening to music, especially oldies and classic Mexican singers. He was also fascinated by lowriders and owned a few throughout his life. Poker was another pastime he enjoyed, and he occasionally entered tournaments at casinos around town.
He is survived by his children: Stephanie (Atwine), Johnny Jr., Tiffany (Richard), Joshua (Angelica), and Ruben “Luke”; 16 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his parents, Ruben and Enadine “Dedine”; his sister, Geneve; and many loving nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ruben Jr., and his grandparents.
Visitation will be held at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuaries, 710 West Bethany Home Road, Phoenix, AZ 85013, US, on October 17, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. The funeral service will take place immediately following the visitation.
The Committal Service will be held at Saint Francis Catholic Cemetery, 2033 N 48th St, Phoenix, AZ 85008, US, on October 17, 2026, at 12:00 PM.
