Joe, Mary and I were friends from HS. Joe and I worked at KVRD when only 15, then KV IO, and KCLS. I graduated from NAU in 1969. Joe continued his radio career, I didn't. I returned for my 25th HS reunion in 1990 & heard Joe on KFYI. We got together with Mary - what a great memory.  I returned to AZ to live full time in 1997 and listened to KFYI and Joe daily. Remember the good ol' days Joe with all our old radio buds including John Sweat and Eric Tableing from high school and college. See you on the other side, good friend.

Joe!  My best friend in High School, so soon we learn so late.  I'm sorry I didn't know.  I feel real empty learning that you will not be with us.  Memories are all I have to cling to, Rest in Peace my friend I'll see ya on the other side.  

Joe was first and foremost a nice and gracious man.

Joe was a mentor and a friend. I first met Joe in 1985, but I was a fan of his since I was a kid ,listening to him on KOY. I was an intern at KFYI in 1985 and Joe was kind enough to teach me the business. I returned to KFYI in 1995 and worked alongside my friend for 11 years. I learned so much from him, not only about news but about life. We stayed in touch and worked on a few voice over projects. Joe never lost his sense of humor despite his illness. What I wouldn't give to spend a little more time with my friend. The voice of God is now with God.

It was clear, Joe and Mary--fine, fine people. I was looking forward to seeing more of Joe sometime, as was my father. Now, both have been freed to moved on. Joe certainly was blessed by having Mary in his life.

So blessed to have an uncle like my Uncle Joe. Love you.

I'm sorry to hear about Joe. Dan said he remembers when he was little and would look up at Joe and think what a giant man someday I hope to be a giant like him. He is very sorry and will miss him. Please give me a call (603) 501-6809  Take care of you.

I am so sorry to learn of Joe's passing.  I had called recently and he sounded so good.  Of course Joe was born to sound good!

He and I (and Mary) go way back. I remember hearing how Joe's high school football coach would have Joe - all dressed out in pads and uniform - stroll in front the opposing teams' bench... Just to intimidate them!

I didn't Joe well but always admired his style and of course that great voice. Joe was part of a wonderful time in Phoenix broadcast journalism. My prayers for Joe and his family. May you rest in peace and free now from all pain.

I worked with Joe at KFYI for two years in the late '80s. He was an extremely talented broadcaster and a genuinely nice man. R.I.P., Joe, and condolences to his family.

I met Joe when I visited KOY for a high school career shadowing day. He and everyone at the station were so nice, friendly and down to earth. I will always remember that day and remain grateful to Joe and his colleagues for being so kind.

Joe was the nicest man. We would argue about certain topics that were in the news...he always had a few opinions that were "uniquely Joe". In all his "gruffness" though he made me laugh. I loved to try to get him to giggle, yes, our silliness in the newsroom would elicit giggles from the serious newsman. He, myself and Bob Bennett laughed ALOT! We had fun, I will miss you Joe. RIP

One of the kindest and most genuine individuals I have ever been blessed to meet and to work beside.  You will be dearly missed, my friend.

I just saw this (July 26) and wanted to add that I had the pleasure of working with Joe for a few years at ClearChannel/iHeartMedia.  Joe and I both worked the morning shift and I would go into the KFYI news area to pull AP news for KEZ.  While there I would converse a bit with Joe and Bob Bennett, both professionally grumpy, the way old news guys are supposed to be after years of having to tell the stories of human failings.  But both had a sense of humor and were generous to me whenever I needed help with any technical or news issues.  When Joe left I kept waiting for him to come back, but then heard that he retired.  Joe was a legend in Phoenix broadcasting, and he earned that distinction by being one of the best for a lot of years.  I'm glad I was lucky enough to share some of that time.

Joe was a good man and a good friend who brightened every day we shared at the radio ranch.  Joe and Mary helped me and Al celebrate our 25th Anniversary. I hope Joe, Mo and Al are together upstairs, sharing a drink and maybe a cigarette and recalling the good old days.  RIP Joe.
