Julia Lucile Roca

Lucile (Lucy) Roca was born in Arizona to Zona Hildreth and Walter Johannessen and remained in Arizona for the rest of her life. She attended Phoenix schools and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Western States University. Lucy married L. David West on March 13, 1948. Her subsequent marriage was to Paul M. Roca on March 1, 1975, and he predeceased her. Lucy was a member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity and remained active all her life having served the national organization as Province President, Director of Chapter House Corporation at Arizona State University and as Grand Treasurer. A life long Episcopalian, Lucy was extremely active in the church serving in many capacities in her parish and the Diocese of Arizona, including being the first woman elected to the Standing Committee and the first woman to be elected to represent the Diocese at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. She served as president of the Diocesan Episcopal Churchwomen and was one of the first 28 women to be seated at the National Triennial Convention and served as a delegate at several subsequent Conventions. Lucy became very active with the Phoenix Art Museum where she became a Master Docent and was honored as Docent of the Year a number of times. She worked diligently with the Museums library to convert it to the Library of Congress filing systems, gave lectures on the art work and donated to the museum. Lucy is survived by her daughter, Barbara W. Truex (Richard), grandson, Ian C. Truex, a great-grandchild Aurora Izabella Truex, and step children, Mariana R. Shulstad, Ellen R. Single, and Michael P. Roca. Funeral service is to be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 6300 N. Central Ave, Phoenix, Arizona on Friday March 16th at 10:00AM. A reception will follow services at The Phoenix Art Museum. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Phoenix Art Museum, The Assistance League of Phoenix, or The Episcopal Diocese of Arizona.
