Kathy Sue Lloyd (nee. Schallenberger) fought a long and courageous fight with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and passed in the arms of her love at home on March 3, 2025. Kathy was born September 28,1960 in Waterloo, Iowa to Buster and Darlys Schallenberger. She was the youngest of the three children, brother Steve & sister Mary. The family made the move to Arizona when Kathy was a young girl. She attended Sunnyslope High school and graduated in the class of 1978.
Kathy had one child, Christina, who was the light of her life! Kathy started volunteering at the preschool Christina attended to be closer & more involved. Once her daughter was in elementary school in the early 1990’s Kathy made the move to the same elementary district and made a career out of it. She began her career there as a paraprofessional working in 6th grade and eventually found her way to the technology department. Kathy was a Lab Tech II at Madison Elementary School district until she retired in 2014.
In May of 2007, Kathy met her fiancée, Kevin Wesolowski, on Plenty of Fish and they were fortunate to have had almost 18 years together. During their time of her healthier days they went on many adventures together, creating numerous memories along the way. The couple traveled the country to visit family, enjoyed time up North with friends, and perhaps Kathy’s most favorite of all was when their travels would land at the beach.
In July of 2023, Kathy was diagnosed with a very rare neurodegenerative disorder, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) which falls under the umbrella of Atypical Parkinsons (Parkinsonism) and is one of the 12 neurological disorders that can be categorized in the dementia family. Unfortunately at this time there is no cure and the disease is 100% terminal. The family encourages everyone to learn more about PSP and other rare neurological disorders, as the more awareness there is, the greater chance other families will not lose their loved ones this way as well. When Kathy fell ill and eventually diagnosed with PSP, Kevin never once left her side. He was selflessly and compassionately her sole caregiver until her last day, vowing to do everything in his power to make sure she did not leave this world alone and did so in the peace of her own home with dignity.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents Buster and Darlys Schallenberger, her two siblings, Steve Schallenberger and Mary Bortz, as well as her nephew Patrick Prewitt. Kathy is survived by her daughter, Christina Ontiveros-Humble (Steven), her fiancée Kevin, his 2 daughters Nicole (David) & their kids Faith, Logan and Reiter and Lauren and her children, nephews Keith and Adam, niece Sarah, as well as many extended family and friends.
A private celebration will be held. Family and friends may reach out for further details.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made in Kathy’s name to support PSP research and resources at www.psp.org/donate
