I love and miss you so much.  You live on every day with those you touched.   I can still hear your voice when I wonder how you would react to something encountered in my life.  Thank you Dad!

Sonya, I am so sad to hear of uncle Lee's passing today July 6, 2014. I wanted you to know how grateful  myself, Tanya, and my  Mom Jean were  to Lee  when he came as a young funeral director to Albuquerque  in 1972 to help make the funeral arrangements for our Dad and his eldest brother Jack after his premature death.

I will always remember him for his act of kindness and assistance.

Oh my sweet brother.  I already miss you so much.  You were such a treasure to our family.  I will always miss that sweet smile and impish gleam in your eyes!!   You always looked out after me when we were growing up and I thank you so much for that.  We also had such wonderful times at the cabin and I thank you and Sonia for that.  What great times!!  The only good thing about all of this is that I  know you are not suffering anymore.  We will do our best to take care of Sonia (and the cats).  I  love you so much sweetheart and will look forward to seeing you again.

I suppose the greatest legacy is what a person leaves behind.  I don't know if I can expand on the innumerable accolades so eloquently written and heartfelt that is appearing here already. While I never had the good fortune to meet Lee, I have had the opportunity to know one of his legacies, his son, Michael.  If Mike is the example of how Lee Scott lived his life, then he lived a life most well indeed. You simply cannot measure character and integrity.

My deepest condolences, Mike. Will keep you and all of your family in my prayers.

You will be greatly missed Grandpa. I will continue to celebrate your life and live in the legacy that you have provided. Love you.

I love you Granddad and I know that you loved me too. I always enjoyed the times I spent with you and I will remember those times for the remainder of my life. I will never forget your voice, your cheerful and joking personality, and your love for your family… Even though it hurt me to see you sick, I wasn't ready for you to leave. But, I am comforted in knowing that you are no longer suffering... Granddad, your funeral was so beautiful. There were so many people in attendance who loved you. The room weighed heavy with compliments and words of love from those whose lives you had impacted. You would have been so pleased at the service. Certainly, your funeral was the best Shadow Mountain has ever done... With your passing I have felt charged to live my life in a way more resembling yours. I will live each day in a manner that would bring you pride. I will continue to love my grandma and help her as best I can… Although I miss you terribly, I know we will see each other again. Until then, I love you, goodbye.

Valley Law Enforcement Loses a Dear Friend

Among the many obituaries we might read in the next few days will be one that bears a second read and a moment for pause. While everyone who passes is deserving of the final respects paid by their family and friends I direct you to the brief summary of the life well lived by Mr. Lee R. Scott who passed away on February 10th of this year. While his obituary speaks loudly and clearly of the many kindnesses Mr. Scott has paid to the living over a life lasting 79 years, it's likely that even if you didn't know Lee Scott, you should know what he has quietly and kindly done for the dead over the last fifty some years.

I am grateful that Mr. Scott served our country in the Korean War as a United States Marine Corps member, I'm forever thankful that he supported many civic organizations, and was involved in furthering countless youth programs. His four adult children are a testament to his dedication as a father, and his 55-year marriage, a credit to his commitment as a husband. Mr. Scott was a fair and reputable business owner; in 1975 he founded Shadow Mountain Mortuary in the North Valley, and he went about running his business like any other dedicated business owner for many years. For the casual observer, that's where the story of Lee Scott ends. After all, Mr. Scott was quick with his wit, great at complimenting others and staying out of the limelight, and he loved to serve.

Here is what you should know about Lee Scott that he would never tell you, even if you asked. For as long as anyone can remember, Mr. Scott has quietly provided funeral and burial services for many forgotten members of our community. Members of the homeless community, many veterans without families, were provided respectable burials because Lee Scott cared. Over the years several unknown infants, abandoned after birth, were buried with dignity at the hands of Lee Scott.  But Lee's generosity extended far beyond these nameless human beings.

Mr. Scott reached out to the Phoenix Police Department almost 20 years ago after one of our officers was killed in the line of duty.  His message was simple. He wanted us to know he wanted to do something to help the officer's family. In those days we occasionally would get the offer of floral arrangements, possibly the use of a limousine for the family, or some other kindness, and of course we would very graciously accept. Returning that first call from Lee Scott however, left all of us scratching our heads. Mr. Scott wasn't just offering flowers, or cars; he wanted to furnish an entire funeral, later saying it was his way to pay his respect to a fallen hero. 

In the next few days there were many clarifications, questions, and confirmations, but in the end we learned there was no catch, there was nothing expected in return, and he admonished us from speaking publically about what he had done. From preparation, to visitation, to funeral services, and burial, he and his staff aided in planning the elaborate and intricate funeral services of a law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty.

Mr. Scott repeated this gesture again and again for not only the families of Phoenix Police Officers killed, but also many other valley police officers' families. After Mr. Scott retired several years ago, his legacy at Shadow Mountain Mortuary continued, as his staff is always among the first to call, the first to offer help, and above all else, the first to offer their genuine sympathy.

So with the passing of Mr. Scott comes the lifting of his long-standing admonishment and I am now privileged to say, “On behalf of the grateful men and women of the Phoenix Police Department thank you Lee Scott, for all you have quietly done to care for so many who deserved the simple dignity of an honorable burial, a final resting place, and for those who died protecting our community, a hero's goodbye.”

An amazing man that will be greatly missed by many! We will see you again one day!

I would like to thank you for being a wonderful mentor. The lessons you have taught me will last a lifetime. I will truly cherish the time you were in my families life. Semper Fi and you will be missed.

I am grateful that I was able to be a member of the family and was able to meet and come to know Lee for the short while that I was able.  He will be missed.

I read the Arizona Republic article this morning concerning Mr. Lee Scott. Lee is a true hero and an inspiration to all of us! Mr. Scott was a long time friend of my family; The McCarthys. We have had several family member's arrangements and memorials over the years at Shadow Mountain Mortuary. My Uncle Lee was so special!  No doubt about it.  He did so much for his community, his friends and especially his family.  What a great uncle he was to us!  We were blessed. What a great man.  I've had the opportunity to know and work with Lee for over 30 years.  He was and example and one of my many mentors.  Lee was always one who made you feel included, welcomed and that your opinion counted.  His leadership and friendship will be greatly missed.

Lee Scott was a funeral director you could look to and be inspired by. His devotion to funeral service and the people he served was obvious. I went hunting with Lee in Arkansas. He was always a pleasure to be with. My sympathies to the Scott family.
