A long-time Laveen resident of over 65 years passed away on August 20, 2013, at the age of 91. He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Gloria, and his son, Michael. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Rae and her husband, Jim Rae; sister, Ruby McFarland; four grandchildren, Sean Rae, Tina Borella, Kelly McFarland, and Michelle McFarland, and three great-grandchildren. Leroy was born in Wayne, Oklahoma in 1922 and moved with his family to Laveen in 1938, where he lived and worked as a farmer and ranch hand. He served in the Army in World War II and received the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon, and the American Theater Ribbon. He loved telling stories about Laveen; its history, farming, and families that lived there. He also liked to reminisce about his days in the Army as part of Harbor Defense, defending naval shipyards in Chesapeake Bay. He loved the great outdoors and had a love of animals. Leroy enjoyed and appreciated his many friends for their companionship, compassion, and caring during these last few years. He was a man of strong character and highest integrity who will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and cherished in the hearts of all who knew him. A memorial service will be held for Leroy on Monday, September 2, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary, 719 North 27th Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona 85009.
