Louis Kuan Toy (‘Louie’), born November 20, 1931, the ninth of eleven children and the first generation to be born to Dea Hong and Lee Chee Toy in Phoenix, Arizona, passed away peacefully under the loving care of Biltmore Care Home and Vera Care Hospice, on Friday, July 13, 2018.
Dad attended Madison No. 1 Elementary, graduated from North Phoenix High School, earned an AA from Phoenix College, and attended UofA. First Lieutenant Louis served in the United States Army Reserves from 1949 to 1955 as a firearms instructor at the Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning, GA. After his service to country, he was a co-owner of Toy’s Shangri-la until 1976. After the restaurant closed, he founded, owned, and operated Phoenix Shooter’s Supply (retail), Phoenix Wholesale Sporting Supply (wholesale that serviced the greater Southwest), and Phoenix Fishing and Camping from 1976 to 1999.
Dad was an avid hunter, fisherman, camper, and shooting enthusiast. He was a life member of both the NRA and the Amateur Trapshooting Association, and a member of the Hassayampa Rod and Gun Club
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Sue Lee, Jeanette Ngan, Lt Col William Toy, Katherine Dare, Grey Toy, and Henry Toy.
Dad is survived by his wife of 58 years Alice (Wing); Children: Tim Toy, Dennis Toy, and Pamela Toy Yoshida; Grandchildren: Amber Toy and Luke Toy; Siblings: Violet Toy, Nancy Yuke, Betsy Yee, Shirley Tung; Three generations of nephews and nieces; and his beloved pets Holly, Simba, and Coconut.
