To my cousin Lovette.
I remember when we were early teen girls left unsupervised for several days of freedom one summer. I watched with doubt as you turned flour and water into delicious dumplings for our starving little group.  Then, out of options, you came to the rescue once again. When I could barely make my way from Baseline to Broadway, unlost, you walked us all the way across town with sure steps. Your gentle voice, demure manner and girlish laugh might cause one to think you were a fragile flower best kept under glass. But not so. You were strong, determined and not easily daunted. When your mom rescued me from this summer of freedom, I started eighth grade with you and was amazed by your way. You were master of your community. You feared no one and enjoyed everyone.  I so admired you and wanted to be more like you. Though the years carried us in other directions and out of touch, every time we've chanced to meet your lovely smile warmed my heart and it was so good to see you again.  Genteel lady, compassionate and forgiving; strong woman of great courage; loving mother and good friend.  I admire you still.
