Lowell C. Bailey Jr. was born on June 27, 1927 at the historic Stork’s Nest in Tucson, Arizona to his parents, Lowell Bailey Sr. and Marie Cloud Bailey. Lowell attended Tucson schools, where he excelled in sports, and pitched on the Tucson Badgers National Championship team in 1944. He graduated from high school in 1945, joined the Navy and served until the end of the war. Lowell returned to Tucson and enrolled at the University of Arizona where he was a four-year varsity letterman in baseball, and was also elected president of his class for all four years. In 1950, he married the late Marilyn Michaels of Bisbee, and together they had four children. Upon graduation from the University of Arizona, he began his teaching career in Phoenix as a teacher and coach at Madison Elementary School. He coached baseball at Phoenix Tech and Phoenix High School, also receiving a MA+88 from ASU. In 1965, he joined the sports faculty at Phoenix College, and coached and taught there until his retirement in 1989. He was a licensed physical trainer and began the Cardiac Physical Exercise Class at Phoenix College that remains to this day. Lowell is a member of the Phoenix College Hall of Fame. After retiring, he became a docent at the Desert Botanical Garden, earning a “Hardy Perennial” with over fifteen years of service. He served on the board of directors for the Arizona Senior Olympics, and volunteered with the Visiting Nurses’ Association. Lowell became a resident of the Beatitudes Campus of Care in 2009, where he was instrumental in creating the Award Winning Beatitudes Community Garden, which continues to thrive. In 2011, he was married there by Reverend Nelson, Beatitudes founder, to his second wife, Joannie. He was president of the Beatitudes Auxiliary from 2014 to 2017. Lowell was a member of The Church of the Beatitudes. He loved to write, and published many poems and articles in the Beatitudes Roadrunner Extra, and the National Senior Correspondent.

A memorial service for Lowell will be held Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Beatitudes Campus, 1610 W Glendale Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85021.
