My Gram lived an extraordinary 100 years, and I was blessed to call her my grandmother for 44 of them.

She was a woman of faith, strength, generosity, humor, and more than a little sass. She was a military wife, mother, school secretary, competitive trap shooter—and even an Arizona state champion. She loved Tucson, the Sonoran Desert, Diamondbacks baseball, hummingbirds, sweets, and a truly terrible pun.

Gram was careful with what she had and incredibly generous with others. She reused everything, clipped coupons, gave faithfully to her church and charities, and even left coupons she couldn’t use beside products at the store for someone else. She always said she had been blessed, couldn’t take it with her, and if she had the means to give, she should.

She spoiled me endlessly with sweet treats, Mexican lunches and full tanks of gas. She taught me to sew and patch my jeans, and some of my favorite memories are simply sitting beside her in Show Low, watching hummingbirds at the feeders while afternoon monsoons rolled in.

Gram loved her sayings. One of her favorites was, “Are you wrinkled with a burden? Come to church for a faith lift.” On her little index cards, she repeatedly wrote, “Have an attitude of gratitude.”

Gram and Grandpa were the first people who showed me what it felt like to be loved completely and without conditions. I could do no wrong in their eyes, and I credit them with helping shape the person I am today.

At the end of Gram’s life, I leaned close, told her I loved her and thanked her for everything she had given me. She took her final breath, and when I looked at the clock, it was 3:16. I immediately thought of John 3:16. For a woman whose faith meant so much to her, I can’t imagine a more fitting goodbye.

Gram, I have exactly what you always told to have: an attitude of gratitude.

I’m grateful you were mine. I’m grateful I was yours.

I love you, Gram. Thank you for everything. ❤️

I had the privilege and honor of serving with Mary for many years in the jail ministry. We spent many Sunday afternoons driving to the jail listening to diamondback games on the radio. I was blessed to have an opportunity one time to take her to a game with my son and we all had the best time. Mary was a great friend and a wonderful person and she will be missed.
