On Halloween of 2021, less than two weeks shy of her 68th birthday, Mary “Mimi” Elizabeth Murry Peige passed from this life to the next after a harrowing and brave battle with pancreatic cancer. Mimi was born on November 12, 1953 in Riverside, CA to her parents, district attorney Wilburn John Murry of Porterville, CA and fashion designer Mary Elizabeth Brann Murry of Winston-Salem, NC. Mimi resided in Riverside until age 10 when her mother moved her children to Winston-Salem. After spending a few years with her mother’s family, Mimi moved to Baltimore, MD where her mother worked as a pattern maker. Even as a little girl, Mimi knew she wanted to follow in her mother’s fashionable footsteps so she learned to sew stylish dresses and accessories for her Barbies.
Following her dream, Mimi went on to study textile design at Hood College in Maryland. Mimi transferred colleges to be with her husband, John David Peige of Middle River, MD, and graduated with her Bachelor’s from Oklahoma State University.
After graduation, the couple moved to the Washington, D.C. area where they suffered the loss of their premature son, David (1979). The couple moved to New York City, where they welcomed their daughter Rebecca (1982). After a few years in the Big Apple, the family returned to Baltimore where they welcomed their youngest daughters Katie (1988) and Molly (1995). Mimi and John separated soon after Molly’s birth.
Mimi as a single mother raised her children to appreciate fashion, ocean sunrises, and laughter. She set an example of living an independent life as she supported her children through her career in sales. Mimi raised three strong, kind, and beautiful women. Mimi passed away on October 31, 2021 at Katie’s home in Phoenix, AZ. She was buried at Orems United Methodist Church (Middle River, MD) next to her mother and son. Mimi is survived by her three daughters, two son-in-laws, several granddogs, and many dear eternal friends. Mimi will be remembered for her zingy one-liners, her golden heart, and her bubbly personality.
Memorial donations can be made to the Monterey Aquarium’s Sea Otter Program, which benefits Mimi’s favorite animal.
