Nancy Joan (pronounced “JoAn”) Roberds was born at home in West Phoenix to Mary Etoile and Riley Roberds on March 9, 1932. She was the oldest of three sisters; both Evelyn Jean Norlin and Mary Jane Sutter preceded her in death.
During her childhood the family moved several times due to her dad’s construction work, including time spent in Oregon. But after marrying Gene Fleming at the age of 18 and one day, Jodie(the nickname he gave her) lived the remainder of her life in Arizona, the majority of that time was on the 115th avenue Fleming Thoroughbred Farm. Only after the farm relocated to Willcox, Arizona in 2006 did Jodie and Gene move to a home in Pebble Creek. Her husband of 60+ years and the love of her life preceded her in death, February 2011.
Jodie’s dream as a young woman was always to be a homemaker, and that she did to the utmost. She was a wife. She was a mother. She was a seamstress, a neat-as-a-pin housekeeper, an expert at laundry, and she excelled at wonderful home-cooked meals and desserts, jams, jellies and candy. Oh there is so much more! How do you fit 92 years in to 2 paragraphs? She was the Matriarch, and she became “Grandma Jodie” and “Aunt Jo” to not only her family, but to family and friends who needed that special generational person in their lives.
Jodie is survived by her four children, Carolyn Hardison, Marvin(Debbie), Jolene Larson, and Gerald(Teri); 12 grandchildren, who all reside in Arizona, and 28 great-grandchildren, with another due in December. She has extended family of many nieces and nephews, and one cousin from her generation.
A Celebration of life Service will be held Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary and Cemetery – 719 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix, 85009. Visitation 10am, Service 11am, followed by graveside. The family humbly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to one of the following, or charity of choice.
