Oscar H. Romero, age 94, of Phoenix, peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the Hospice of the Valley – Sherman Home in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born on May 28, 1925 to the late Rafael and Petra (Hoyos) Romero in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. He proudly served in the US Army during World War II. On November 2, 1946 he married Hermelinda Lobato in Douglas, Arizona. They were married for 63 wonderful years. Oscar worked as a Produce Manager of Safeway for 30 years retired and then worked for a short time for the Phelps Dodge Smelter. Oscar and Hermelinda lived in Douglas for 51 years where they raised their family. They moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1981. Oscar was a member of the American Legion Post #11, The Club Alba and the Bushmasters club all of Douglas, Arizona. He enjoyed having his family around always making his grandchildren laugh with his funny faces and jokes. He LOVED dancing, singing, and music, and enjoyed watching baseball. He made the best Chorizo ever. Oscar is survived by his loving children, daughter-in-law, Maria Rocio Romero, Oscar (Brenda) Romero, Armando (Kathy) Romero, Rosa Ophelia (Bobby) Verdugo, Olivia (Rey) Garcia, Lorenzo Romero, and Bernadette (Jaime) Galvez. Oscar leaves behind a legacy of 21 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren & 10 great great grandchildren, who will greatly miss him. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hermelinda in 2009; his great granddaughter, Nevaeh Alise Garcia in 2014; and his son, Manuel H. Romero in 2019. Oscar being the last of his siblings is proceeded in death by his three brothers, Rafael, Aldaberto & Hector; and their only sister, Ofelia Romero Valencia. They are all now united together again in heaven. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Shadow Mountain Mortuary, 2350 E. Greenway Road, Phoenix, AZ 85022 with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, June 24, 2019, at Shadow Mountain Mortuary with the Committal Service with Military Honors to follow 12:30 pm at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ 85024. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Oscar’s honor may be made to the Hospice of the Valley - Sherman Home at 5801 E. Mayo Blvd. Phoenix, Arizona 85054.
