Patricia Kempers Coward, 81, passed away peacefully on April 25th in Scottsdale, AZ. Originally from Silver Spring, MD, she attended Montgomery Blair High School and graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in nursing. She married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Coward, and was a dedicated mother to her four children who were raised in Yorktown Heights, NY. She was a strong and compassionate caregiver throughout her life as a nurse and volunteer in many organizations.
After retirement, Pat found a new spirit of adventure, traveling to Ireland and rafting through the Grand Canyon and doing a houseboat trip on Lake Powell. She moved to Scottsdale, AZ and then Key West, FL to spend time with her grandchildren whom she adored. She found strength in the Catholic faith and devoted countless hours to St. Mary’s Star of the Sea as a Eucharistic Minister, and in the Adoration
Chapel and St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen. Her favorite course was dessert. She loved taking long walks with her dog and reading mystery novels, but her greatest love was spending time with her family. Her inner strength and compassion is remembered by all who knew her.
Pat is survived by her four children: Chris Coward of Englewood, CO, Tom Coward, Jr. of Key West, FL, Sue Abbass, and Bill Coward both of Phoenix, AZ and their spouses, as well as her three sisters: Mary Brehm, Jane Kosyjana, and Judy Jordan, and four grandchildren: Kevin Coward, Brian Coward, Calvin Abbass, and Christopher Abbass, and her beloved dog Titus. A memorial service will be held at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church in Scottsdale, AZ on May 12 at 11am, followed by a celebration of her life in Key West, FL. In her spirit of compassionate giving to those in need, donations in her memory should be made to the non-profit, Alzheimer's Prevention and Reversal Project (APRP).
