Phillis Herman, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home on July 4, 2016 surrounded by family.
Born Phillis Jean Shupak in Bridger Montana, the youngest of 8 children, she lived at the family ranch on Dry Creek before attending school in Billings where she obtained her teaching degree and taught multi-grades in a one-room school. She settled in Phoenix in 1961 and continued her education at Grand Canyon College. Prior to retirement Phillis was a dedicated teacher in the Paradise Valley School District where she taught 1st and 2nd grade for 35 years. She married Ray Herman (deceased) in 1967 with whom she raised 7 children, enjoyed traveling in their motor home and entertaining friends. In her spare time Phillis was an avid reader, loved to dance and delighted in the thrill of slot machines.
A compassionate and patriotic person, Phillis contributed countless hours to VFW Post 9400 throughout her life, was active in the Elks Lodge 335, St Joan of Arc Church, the American Legion and supported multiple other organizations and charities.
Phillis is survived by sisters Evelyn and Eunice, children ‘Gina, Ray and Betsy, Ivvy and Bryan, Michael, Rosemary, Rita and Brad; grandchildren Kristy and Jake, Fredi and John, Toni and Mark, Steve and Janette, James, Nicole and Danny; great-grandchildren Tyler, Grace, Ray, Nathan, Joshua, Davin, Lila, Chloe, Thomas and Lukas.
She is preceded in death by parents Rudolf and Elizabeth Shupak; siblings Charlie, Kay, Frank, Virginia, and Thomas; and son Roy.
Visitation and Rosary will be held from 6-8 PM at Shadow Mountain Mortuary, 2350 E Greenway Rd on July 14, 2016. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM in St. Joan of Arc Church, 3801 E Greenway Rd on Friday, June 15, 2016 after which she will be interred at Phoenix Memorial Cemetery at 12:00 PM. Friends of the family are invited to gather at her home following the services.
