Rachel (Fenn) Sommer, 89, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away May 11, 2021. She was under the loving care of Hospice of the Valley Thunderbird Home. Rachel was born June 22, 1931 in Pomerene, Arizona to Mary Roberts and Arthur B. Fenn. She grew up and attended public schools in Pomerene, Arizona (Benson Union High School) and in Lehi and Hyrum, Utah.
On January 20, 1951 she married Howard Mack Sommer in Spanish Fork, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on August 19, 1965. To this union were born six children: Bruce, Cindy, Cheryl, Chris, Darrin, and Jimmy. Rachel and Mack lived in Salem, Idaho and in Phoenix, Arizona.
Rachel was a homemaker for many years and loved taking care of her children. She held jobs at Rogers Brothers in Rexburg, Idaho, and worked at Duff's Deli, two nursing homes, and two hotels in Phoenix, Arizona. Over the years, she loved traveling with her husband Mack while he raced horses at many recognized race tracks across the U.S.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rachel was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served as First Counselor and Secretary in the Young Women's Organization. She had a strong testimony of the gospel.
She enjoyed cooking, canning, quilting, crocheting, huckleberrying, and spending time with her family.
Rachel is survived by her husband, Howard Mack Sommer, of Phoenix, Arizona; her son Bruce (Cindy) of Phoenix, Arizona; her daughter Cindy Bird of Phoenix, Arizona; her daughter Cheryl (Jack) Simonds of Meridian, Idaho; her daughter Chris Jones of Phoenix, Arizona; her son Jimmy (Traci) Sommer of Phoenix, Arizona; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Darrin Mack Sommer.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 17, 2021 at 11:00 am at Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary, 200 W. Beardsley Rd., Phoenix, Arizona. Family will meet with friends and family prior to the funeral from 10:00 - 10:45 am. Burial will follow the service at Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary.
