

Earnest “Ray” Carter, age 84 of Phoenix, Arizona passed away in his home that he loved, with his wife Gretchen by his side on Thursday, July 13, 2023. Ray was born in Auburn, Kentucky in 1939 where he graduated high school then moved to Florida where he met his first wife Nancy in 1959. They had their first daughter Selena there, then proceeded to move to Phoenix where they had 1 more daughter Wendy and then a son Jim. As an electrician he started his own successful electrical contracting business, Carter Electric in 1963 here in Phoenix.
Ray was an interesting man, a husband, an inventor, traveler, father, friend, and a generous, caring man who loved animals and always reached out to help others. Although he was prosperous, he lived modestly and was always finding a way to help so many people in all kinds of ways. Everyone respected him, loved him and always only had the best of admiration for him.
With his sharp, dry humor and quick wit, he would always give you a chuckle when you’d least expect it. He was known for his intelligence and his genuine manor.
Ray is survived by his wife Gretchen who has been with him in their 35 plus year relationship, daughter Selena and her husband Ken, daughter Wendy, son Jim and granddaughter Christie.
Ray had many friends and a family that loved him. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 20 at 10 AM at Greenwood Funeral Home Serenity Chapel located at 719 N. 27th Avenue in Phoenix.
