Richard Bermudes

Richard was born on May 14, 1944, in Corpus Christi, Texas, the son of Jesse Bermudes and Matianita Carbajal. Following his family’s relocation to Hollister, California in October of 1959, Richard lived and worked throughout California, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. Since 1981, Richard called Phoenix. Arizona his home, resettling briefly in Bernalillo, New Mexico and Goliad, Texas, before returning for retirement to his Phoenix residence.

Richard graduated from Hollister High School, Gavilan College, California State University Stanislaus, Latin American Bible Institute, and Nova University with degrees in Fine Arts, Theology, and a Master of Science in Education. Richard served as a minister in the Assembly of God Church, a chaplain for workers in the horse racing industry, a teacher of adult education, an elementary and middle level teacher, and an elementary and middle level school principal.

Richard was actively involved in the church and initiated workdays and service projects that demonstrated God’s love for humankind. One of these projects was leading small group mission trips. Richard organized and facilitated building and relief projects, mobilizing teams of college students to serve children and youth residing in children’s homes and to support families in need throughout northern Mexico.

Richard is preceded in death by his father Jesse, beloved mother Matianita, and siblings Bertha (Carl) Holt, and Louis (Emily) Bermudes. Richard is survived by his treasured wife of 52 years Betty Joyce Bermudes, children Kimberly (Scott) Brewer and Jake (Lucy) Bermudes, four grandchildren Arrianna, Aaliyah, Harrison and Jake, seven step-grandchildren Paul, David, Nathan, Estrella, Ana, Jonathan, and Ariana, one great-grandson Josiah, and siblings George (Vera) Bermudes, Jaqueline (Abe) Brignoni, Elizabeth (Tom) Nava, Ruth (Douglas) Stephens, Rudy (Karen – deceased) Bermudes, Naomi (Brian – deceased) Boucher, and Jeanette (Ed) Revelli.

Richard will be missed by all his family and friends.

Memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at 10AM at Phoenix Memorial Park & Mortuary, 200 West Beardsley Road, Phoenix, AZ 85027.
