Richard was born November 22, 1944 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was an excellent student, graduating from De La Salle High School and starting college at age 16. Richard attended Christian Brothers College in Memphis and the University of Missouri at Kansas City before being drafted into the Army in 1965. After his discharge from the military in 1967, he worked at Electronic Data Systems as an information technology systems engineer and program manager for nearly 30 years. His work with EDS took him to Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Texas, and Arizona before he settled in Scottsdale, Arizona for his retirement years. During retirement, he worked as a bank teller and volunteered his time to help seniors file their income taxes.
Richard loved camping and hiking, including rim-to-rim hikes in the Grand Canyon. He was an avid soccer fan and always enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s games. He gave back to the sport by coaching and refereeing youth soccer for many years. Richard was always making jokes; the surest way to his heart was to trade insults with him, particularly about his too-large nose. He was also gifted with tools - he never met one he couldn’t use to skin his knuckles.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Hufstedler Hutton, sons Geoff (Erin) Hutton and Derek (Lisa Fitch) Hutton, grandsons Daniel Hutton and Colin Hutton, and sisters Pat (Jack) Welch, and Barbara (Dean) Hadley. He was preceded in death by his parents Margaret (Martin) Hutton and Herbert Lloyd Hutton.
A celebration of life will be held in Scottsdale, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Richard’s name to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) or The Bluefield Project.
