Rufus McClain, Jr of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at the age of 84. He was born on July 12, 1938 in Waco, Texas and raised in both Marlin and Waco, Texas. As a young man, Rufus was very close to his church home, Pleasant Olive Baptist Church. In A.J. Moore high school, he played baseball in Waco and even played semi-pro for a short time. During these same years he also worked at his father’s gas station in Waco. His military career with the Army started shortly after graduating high school. Rufus met the love of his life, Gloria Bryant, and they wed on November 27, 1965. From this union, their only child Rodney was born. They later settled in Phoenix, where he started his career with the local utility company Arizona Public Service (APS) as an electrician. Rufus held many different roles with APS and retired after over 30 years.
He was actively involved in coaching his son’s baseball and football teams. Rufus was very supportive of Rodney’s athletic activities from early childhood and throughout college. He also had a special connection with his only grandson, Jaymen McClain who affectionately called him “Papa”. Rufus showed unwavering support of his athletic events as well and was a staple at many of Jaymen’s activities. Rufus was so blessed and grateful to see the birth of his great-grandson Rayden and attend the recent wedding for Jaymen and Liana. He was very active in his community, volunteering with Gregory’s Fresh Market, which allowed access to healthy fruits and vegetables for senior citizens.
Rufus was the Chairman of the Board of the Jackson, Wilson, Sanders, Robinson (JWSR) family reunion. He attended all 53 annual family reunions and looked forward to spending time with the family. Rufus was proud to continue the legacy of the family as Chairman and was beloved by everyone.
Rufus was preceded in death by his parents Reverend Rufus McClain and Johnetta McClain, and brother-in-law Milton “Bula” Gooden (Mary).
Rufus leaves to cherish his memory: sister Mary Gooden, son Rodney, grandson Jaymen (Liana), great-grandsons Dominic and Rayden, and a host of relatives and friends.
