Russell John Ross

Russell J. Ross passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the age of 71. His life was shaped by his Christian faith, devotion to family, strong work ethic, loyal friendships, and appreciation for the simple things that brought people together.

Russell was born on January 14, 1955, in Rockford, Illinois, to Walter C. Ross and Elvina (Sandwick) Ross. The youngest of four children, he grew up alongside his brother, David Ross, and his sisters, Gloria Jaynes and Kadie Jury.

On November 9, 1974, Russell married Linda R. Pruitt. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Joanna Ruth, in November 1977. Their son, Robert Walter Ross, was stillborn on November 9, 1981. In December 1982, their family grew again with the birth of twin sons, Russell J. Ross II and Ray C. Ross. Russell married Patricia Ann (Cooley) Ross in September 1986. Patricia brought her daughter, LeeAnn Cooley, into the family, and Russell became her father. Russell and Patricia also shared a daughter, Diane, born in June 1986.

Russell and Patricia built a blended family and shared more than 30 years of marriage before Patricia passed away on June 5, 2017.

For 45 years, Russell worked as a sheet metal machinist for Precise Metal Products Co. His career reflected the patience, skill, precision, and dependability with which he approached his life. He took great pride in his profession, his many years of service, and his ability to provide for his family through honest, dedicated work.

Outside of work, Russell enjoyed road trips and camping. He valued the journey, the time spent together, and the memories created along the way. He also liked building models and putting together puzzles, activities well suited to his patient and careful nature.

Music was another important part of Russell’s life. He loved listening to music, and the songs he enjoyed became part of the memories he shared with his family. To honor that part of his life, his family has created a memorial playlist featuring music that reminds them of Russell and helps tell his story.

Russell had a special love for flowers and took great pride in tending his rose beds. He appreciated the beauty that came from caring for something patiently and watching it grow. He also loved hosting holidays, opening his home to family and friends, and creating traditions that brought everyone together. Russell was a good and loyal friend to many and deeply valued the relationships he formed throughout his life.

Russell was a Christian, and his faith was an important part of who he was. His family finds comfort in knowing that he is now at peace in the presence of the Lord and reunited with the loved ones who went before him.

Russell’s family legacy continues through his children: Joanna R. (Ross) Couch, Russell J. Ross II, Ray C. Ross, LeeAnn Cooley, and Diane R. (Ross) Beeson. He was the proud grandfather of Christopher, Reese, Evan, Lyla, John, Milo, and EmmaRae, and the proud great-grandfather of Ellie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter C. and Elvina (Sandwick) Ross; his brother, David Ross; his infant son, Robert Walter Ross; and his wife, Patricia Ann (Cooley) Ross.

His legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter, and through the stories, songs, and memories his family will continue to share.

Russell will be honored with a private service where he will be laid to rest beside his wife, Patricia at Resthaven Park Cemetery.
