She is survived by son Friedrich Daichendt, his wife Catherine, granddaughters Sarah Ann (Quentin) Luce and Molly Elyse Daichendt, great granddaughters Evelyn Fern and Amelia Éireann Luce, brothers Mathias Daichendt of Tilbury, ON. and Martin (Judith) Daichendt of Scottsdale, AZ. and her nieces and nephews.
Sofia was preceded in death by husband Kurt H. Klos, half-brother Michael Daichendt of Windsor, ON. father Michael and mother Katharina (Thodt-Werner) Daichendt of Windsor, ON. Brother, John Daichendt of Hamilton, ON. sister Katharina Ristau of Windsor, ON. and George Daichendt of Windsor, ON.
With the Soviet invasion of Romania in 1944, Sofia’s “Saxon” family fled to Austria near Salzburg where, in 1951, her son Friedrich was born. In 1954, she and the remaining Daichendt family emigrated to a small farm near Hamilton, Ontario. She soon moved to Hamilton for work and there met and married Kurt, her husband of 51 years. In 1957, they moved to Niagara Falls, NY. Sofia was a housewife but in the early years she worked a wide variety of domestic jobs to help support the family. These included lovingly caring for several chronically ill elderly ladies.
In 1977 they moved to Phoenix where they purchased a 7-unit apartment complex which Sofia managed while Kurt worked for Universal Propulsion Company. Later they moved to several other homes in the Phoenix area and finally retiring in Sun City. In 2018, a few years after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, she was no longer able to live on her own, so Sofia took up residence at Sunshine Village, a memory care facility near her son and daughter-in-law. She resided there comfortably until her death.
Sofia’s was a life lived far outside the norms of the North American experience. She was an eleven-year-old girl forced into a war-torn adult world. As a result, she developed a tenacious will, strength of purpose and sense of duty to family. Traits which she exhibited through many painful trials, particularly in her younger years. She loved to dance, had an infectious smile, made friends easily, and never looked down on anyone. God be with you till we meet again.
