Spence Cardell Atkins
August 7, 1969 ~ April 15, 2019
Spence Cardell Atkins born to the union of Henrietta and Robert Atkins on August 7, 1969 in Columbus, Mississippi…“The Dirty South,” where he was raised and reared until the mid-1970’s when he and his family were afforded the opportunity to travel abroad and the see the world. Being as they were a military family (United States Air Force), and he was considered a “military brat,” their travels took them from Florida to Spain, meeting different people, experiencing different cultures, cuisines, and ways of life.
Upon returning to Columbus, Spence continued to hone his skills on the basketball court and baseball field while attending New Hope High School. Displaying elite abilities on the baseball field, he was offered and accepted an athletic scholarship to Voorhees College in South Carolina.
Shortly after his time in college, Spence set his sights for the west coast, and moved to California where he lived with his brother Alvin in Signal Hill. He quickly adapted to the “hustle and bustle” of the California lifestyle, and secured a position at a local bank in Long Beach, moving up the banking ladder quickly, from processing deposits, to sales, and management. After several successful years in banking Spence made the decision to change careers. He landed a position as a Bus Operator with MTA in Los Angeles. This opportunity allowed him to interact with people of all walks of life, which he truly loved. He decided to move on from that chapter of his life and become an independent truck owner/operator. Being an owner/operator allowed him to embrace the sense of freedom and flexibility that he long sought after and he also enjoyed assisting others.
Although Spence had no children of his own, he was present and had an impactful and positive influence in the lives of his Niece and Nephew along with many other children who looked up to him.
He is survived by his Mother Mrs. Henrietta Bass (Bobby-husband). Brothers Alvin (Dawn-wife), Robert, and Jonathan Powell, Nephew Bryant, Niece Elise, Aunts, Uncles, and a host of Cousins, in addition to countless Friends and Acquaintances.
On behalf of the entire family, they would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the outpouring of support, words of encouragement, condolences, and care.
