New River - Spencer E. Blackburn, 96, died at 1:40 am Friday, June 14, 2019, in his home. Born on August 11, 1922, in Riddle Hill, IL, to the late Bessie and Donald Blackburn. He married Mary Daves on June 3, 1944 in Fort Sill, OK. He later married Janice Oberlander on January 17, 1955. Spencer served his country as a tank driver in the Army during World War II as part of Company B 786th Battalion and was honorably discharged. He was an entrepreneur, having many of his own businesses in construction as well as a car dealership. Survivors include one son, Gene (and Fran) Blackburn of Phoenix, AZ; three daughters, Suzette (and Frank) Sumner, of Peoria, IL, Victoria (and Gene) Richard, and Teri Mundy, both of Phoenix, AZ; two step-sons, Doug (and Karen) Oberlander and Greg (and Joni) Oberlander of Peoria, IL; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters Maurine Gutierrez and Esther (and Bill) Gaa. He was preceded in death by his wife Janice, one daughter, Marlene Phelps of Mudrow, OK, two grandchildren and five siblings. Committal service with Military Honors will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 26, 2019, at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85024. Procession to the cemetery will begin at 9:00 am at Shadow Mountain Mortuary, 2350 E. Greenway Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85022; all are welcome to join the procession.
