Born in Springfield, Ohio, on September 20, 1949, Sylvia was the only daughter of Bob and Esther Houy. Following Bob's graduation from Wittenberg College in 1955, the family moved to Phoenix. Bob was a teacher and administrator in the Isaac School District until his retirement, and Sylvia followed his exemplary footsteps, graduating from Wittenberg University in 1971 and becoming a teacher in the Isaac District, retiring in 2000. Because she considered education a journey, not a destination, Sylvia hoped to teach her students how to learn; with that knowledge, they would encounter few intellectual boundaries. Travel was her passion, another source of knowledge and understanding. With her husband, Carlo Veronda, Sylvia travelled extensively; creating unmatched, life-enhancing memories.
Sylvia endured the loss of her beloved husband, in 2016. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her memory to Wittenberg University, Office of Advancement, Memorial Fund, P.O Box 720, Springfield, OH 45501.
