Thomas Nunes

November 26, 1942November 20, 2012

In Phoenix, Az. on November 20, Tom crossed the bar to enter eternal rest with our heavenly father. He had battled esophageal cancer for nearly 2 years. Tom was born November 26, 1942 in East Providence, son of Manuel and Marie Nunes. After Tom graduated from Cranston High School in 1960, he entered the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Ct. He was commissioned an Ensign in 1964 and served for 20 years, retiring as a Commander in 1984. During his service time he received a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from New York University in 1974. Entering the private sector, he served in management positions, retiring as international marketing manager for Jensen Tools, his dream job. Tom once again joined the Coast Guard as an Auxiliary member, where he developed a public affairs course taught nationwide. A good man who always saw possibilities in any endeavor. In 1964, he married Pamela Monti of Cranston and they raised three children, Daniel, Jennifer, and Christopher. Besides his beloved wife and children he is survived by 9 grandchildren. The Visitation will be at Corpus Christi Catholic Church 3550 E. Knox Rd. Phoenix, Friday November 23 10:00 a.m. with the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at the Church. The family prefers donations be made to: USCG Alumni Association; Cadet Activity Fund. Arrangements are entrusted to Carr-Tenney Mortuary, Tempe. Visit to share condolences and memories with Tom’s family.

I worked with Tom at Jensen Tools. He was a professional who also had a lot of heart and cared for the people he worked with. I learned a lot from Tom and am sorry that he is gone. My condolences to Pam and family. Tom was a good person.

I was so glad to spend time with Tom, one of my Coast Guard Auxiliary mentors, at the recent USCG Auxiliary National Conference. I received an award which I would not have gotten if it wasn't for Tom's unparalleled instruction in Coast Guard Public Affairs work. But besides that, he was an excellent man to know. My deepest sympathy for this great loss.

When I first met Tom we were classmates at Alameda in Public Affairs C-School. It didn't take long and soon Tom was heading up the PA Department - always trying to lift the rest of us up with a path to new skills, professionalism and proficiencies.

Our thoughts and prayers to Tom's family and to his USCG Auxiliary "extended family" throughout the nation. Tom left a wonderful legacy - we will miss him dearly.
