Velia Urias, age 93, of Peoria, Arizona, entered into Heaven on November 2, 2025, in her home with her family by her side. Velia was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on September 4, 1932. She was the only child of Michael Fuentes and Josefina Apodaca. As a child she loved to spend time with her family, especially her cousins.
At the age of 18, Velia met the love of her life, Armando Urias (who predeceased her), and together they raised six children who also grew up in Phoenix. She loved family vacations, including trips to the beach and camping.
Velia was a devout Catholic who, together with Armando, maintained a strong bond with God, the parish communities of St. Anthony, Immaculate Heart, St. Rafael, and St. Helen Catholic churches, and the members of the Cursillo Center. Her faith was unmatched, and her light undimmed. Velia was a dedicated and hardworking woman. She graduated from Phoenix Union High School and went on to build a 35-year career as a secretary with Motorola. She also worked at other major companies. Her strong work ethic was matched only by her devotion to her family.
Family was her heart and the focus of her life. She worked tirelessly to create a loving, stable foundation for her children and to instill in them the values of hard work and enduring family bonds. Being present at every event.
As the matriarch of her family, Velia was the one everyone gathered around. She loved bringing her family together—hosting holiday gatherings, celebrating every birthday and milestone with warmth and enthusiasm. Her home was always open, and her presence created a sense of unity that will be deeply missed.
Velia leaves behind her children, Ricky (Dorothy), Randy (Araceli), Raul (Sylvia), Roxanne (Stan), Joanne (Greg), Michael (Cathy); 17 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass is being held at St. Helens Catholic Church on December 3, 2025. Rosary at 9:30 am, Mass at 10 am and a reception to follow. An interment at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona is scheduled for December 4, 2025, at 10:30 am.
Velia was greeted in Heaven by the love of her life, Armando, her mother, Josefina, and many other family members with whom she shared a close bond.
