Virgil Edgar Pound was born August 20, 1941, in Pratt, Kansas, to Carl and Edith Pound. Virgil was the youngest of three, growing up alongside his sister, Glenna, and his brother and lifelong sidekick, Larry. Growing up on a farm, harvesting apricots, peaches, walnuts, and pecans, was where Virgil learned to love hard work - rising at dawn and working until dusk. The strong work ethic he developed during those years remained a defining characteristic throughout his life.
When Virgil was ten, he met a girl at church named Cheyrl and a mere eleven years later, in 1963, they were married, beginning a devoted partnership that would carry them through every season of life. Together they built a home centered on faith, laughter, and love.
Virgil built a remarkable career as an engineer, dedicating nearly thirty years at Peterbilt Motors and its parent company, PACCAR, to the design and development of heavy-duty trucks. His talent, creativity, and attention to detail led to five patents for innovative truck designs and earned him increasing leadership responsibilities throughout his career. Though he took great pride in his work, retirement in 2000 opened the door to one of his favorite adventures. Trading his “mechanical pencil and calculator” for a baseball cap and a 40-foot motorhome, Virgil and Cheyrl spent the next decade traveling the country together, exploring 38 states and making cherished memories before relocating to Arizona to be near their children and grandchildren.
Virgil was known for his warm sense of humor and the way he could lighten any moment—often with a joke, and sometimes with a harmless prank, especially if Larry was within reach. He was a steady presence for his family: coaching, helping with homework, fixing what was broken, building what was needed, and making sure his children and grandchildren knew they were loved. He rarely missed a milestone, from graduations to games to weddings, and his support was as dependable as it was wholehearted.
Above everything else, Virgil loved the Lord and served his church faithfully. In his later years, his walk with Christ deepened in a way that was visible to everyone around him, marked by tenderness, devotion, and joy.
Virgil entered heaven on May 29, 2026. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cheyrl; his sister, Glenna; his children Schelley, Renee, and Marty and daughter-in-law Megan; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life service will be held June 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at New Promise Christian Fellowship.
