Wai immigrated to the United States in 1981. He met his wife, Cindy, in 1982; they married in Guangzhou in 1983, and permanently moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1984.
A survivor of the Second Sino-Japanese War, he overcame many hardships before taking an opportunity to immigrate to the US. After owning and working in restaurants for over 20 years, he retired at the age of 70 and spent his last years traveling, visiting friends, playing mahjong, going on daily walks, and enjoying the company of his children and grandchildren.
Wai was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wai Ming Wong, his father-in-law, and his mother-in-law. He is survived by Cindy, his wife of 42 years, his three children, Julie (son-in-law, Benjamin), Michael, and Eileen (her partner, Brad) his grandchildren, Sebastian, Alexander, and Olivia.
A private visitation will be held in the morning of July 23, 2024, at Greenwood Memorial Lawn to celebrate his life.
